Zero-Knowledge Rollups Face Their First Serious Audit Reckoning

Zero-knowledge rollups have moved from research to production faster than the tooling required to audit them, and several prominent reviewers have now said publicly that they cannot offer the assurance clients expect.
The difficulty is structural. A soundness bug in a proving circuit is not detectable by testing in the way a conventional contract bug is; it requires formal reasoning about the circuit itself.
Formal verification efforts are underway but cover a fraction of deployed circuits. In the interim, several teams have adopted escape hatches allowing withdrawal under a fallback mechanism.
